The Gray Phantom
Herman Landon
1921 W. J. Watt & Company, New York; First Edition 12mo = 7-9" 294pp Very Good/Fair DJ
Gray cloth covers are slightly bumped on top/bottom of spine & corners. In the front gutter there is a 2inch black stain, and along the back gutter there appears the same darkish stain. Inside of covers, both front & back, is foxing, and inside of back cover is dark brownish stain. Beginning on pg 261 through until the end of the book in the lower right corner, approximately 1/2" in length and less than 1/8" in width is a small water stain that remains in the margins only, there is also a small brown spot that goes through to the inside of the back cover. Dj has 1/14" piece misg from top edge, sliver of the spine top is also missing. Smaller tears and wear to edges of dj. An unusual detective story. "The Gray Phantom was created by Herman Landon, the creator of Picaroon & Godfrey Usher; The Phantom appeared in Detective Story Magazine starting with "Seven Signs". The Phantom is Cuthbert Vanady, and he is a handsome devil, tall, lanky, with a 'lean, clean-chiseled' face and ash-grey eyes to match the gray at his temples and his gray business suits. The Phantom is more than just good-looking, of course. He's a criminal mastermind." Pulp and Adventure Heroes; G, Geocities.
